The Cerebral Department of Transportation
A guide to the road your mind travels
Do you know someone whose thoughts travel roads you struggle to follow, and arrive at destinations that confound your sense of orientation? Over time, despite all evidence standing as obstacles to their convictions, they somehow find their way back to the same mental location — a conclusion that confounds you and, many times, defies logic.
Odds are you do.
The likely culprit is the mental map neuroplasticity builds — drawn and redrawn by what I call the Cerebral Department of Transportation, or CDOT.
To be clear, I'm not a scientist. I'm just someone who has struggled to understand how beliefs and convictions become so channelized — at times absurd — and only deepen over time.
Neuroplasticity is a complex scientific concept, but its core idea is surprisingly straightforward. We often think of the brain as relatively fixed: something we're born with, gradually fill with experience and simply hope to preserve as we age. In reality, it's far more flexible and dynamic. Our brain is constantly adjusting and adapting in response to lived experience and daily demands: our habits, routines, emotional reactions, attention patterns and even the notifications and information we consume.
Your Brain's Road Crew
Think of it this way: your brain has a road crew, CDOT. Its job is to maintain the roads, the neural circuits along which your thoughts travel. CDOT's mission is to constantly monitor your mental traffic, adjusting routes to match the world you're navigating. If you change jobs, take up a new hobby or enter a different social environment, CDOT gets to work, reconfiguring, expanding and rerouting the neural pathways needed to support those changes. Its goal is simple: to optimize traffic flow so your thoughts connect with as little friction as possible.
But like any well-run road crew, CDOT resists wasting resources. When old routes fall out of use, when you drop a habit, abandon a way of thinking or leave a community behind, those neural roads fall into disrepair. In biological terms, they atrophy. And here's the catch: CDOT's resources are limited. The more it invests in one major route, the less remains for the others. The roads we travel most often — the thoughts we rehearse, the stories we repeat, the content we consume — grow wider and more efficient. Meanwhile, the alternative paths toward curiosity, reflection or critical thinking slowly fall away. Over time, they don't just fade; they become harder to access, let alone navigate.
From Two Lanes to Superhighway
Now imagine what happens when your attention remains fixed on the same idea, grievance or identity, day after day. When your conversations, social networks, family and the algorithms shaping your media stream echo the same message over, and over, and over — CDOT gets to work. In time, what may have begun as a two-lane blacktop gradually widens. As mental traffic increases, that path becomes an eight-lane thoroughfare, eventually a one-way neural superhighway engineered for maximum speed and efficiency. And that's the risk. The more efficient CDOT becomes at directing traffic along that one road, the harder it is to exit. The bottom line is this: repetitive thought patterns and homogenous social networks don't just cement our beliefs. They erode our capacity to explore alternatives, leaving us less able to adapt to a world rippling with continuous change.
In academic circles and popular literature, the phrase "neurons that fire together, wire together" is often used to describe the process the CDOT metaphor captures. The idea isn't new. It's shorthand for Hebbian theory, named after psychologist Donald Hebb, who introduced it in 1949.¹ Hebb proposed that when two neurons are repeatedly and simultaneously activated, the connection between them strengthens, making it easier for that pattern to fire again later. In short, repetition reinforces the wiring of the brain.
For most of history, information was scarce, and we had to hunt for it. That has flipped. Today it is abundant, and it hunts us — we are not just targeted by it, but directed and even transformed. To encounter genuinely diverse ideas, concepts and forms of information, we now have to seek them out deliberately. The evidence is in your social media feed. Think about the last time you researched a topic, clicked on an ad or watched a reel, and all of a sudden your feeds, and often the ads that follow, feature that very topic.
An easy example: YouTube. You open the app for something unrelated, maybe a recipe, a highlight reel, a how-to. Off to the side sits a recommendation: a video questioning whether a recent election was fair, whether climate change is real, or whether the Apollo moon landings happened. You click. And the platform takes note. The next time you open the app, the sidebar offers two more like it. Watch those, and the recommendations sharpen. Within a short time, your homepage isn't a window onto the world; it's a row of road signs steering you down the road you've already begun traveling. YouTube isn't showing you what's true. It's showing you what keeps you watching — and what keeps you watching is more of the same.
The Feed Paves for Free
Here's the part worth sitting with: the algorithm and CDOT compound each other. Each rewards repetition. Their relationship widens the road you use most and neglects the offramps that lead to other ideas, possibilities and conclusions. The difference is that social algorithms are built to exploit CDOT's mission — their whole goal is to make the superhighway wider.
You watch, it recommends, you watch, it recommends, and with each pass, the exit ramps toward a different point of view get overgrown, harder to find. The feed doesn't just reflect your convictions back to you. It engineers the conditions under which those convictions deepen — and it does the paving for free.
In his classic "Think and Grow Rich," Napoleon Hill proposed that "whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve."² Today, science is validating what Hill sensed: repeated thought patterns carve neural pathways, and over time they shape our actions and outcomes.
Our brain hasn't changed, but our world has. This may sound dramatic, but we now live in an environment where directing our cerebral road crew is a personal responsibility, one that requires active, deliberate participation. Challenging how we interpret the world, questioning our convictions and beliefs — none of it is easy. But in a world in constant flux, it’s necessary. To keep control of our thoughts and the patterns they form, we have to approach our environment with wide-angle awareness and deliberate curiosity. That is the work of a Seeker's Mindset: to navigate our changing world with agency and, in doing so, to arrive at a destination of our own intention.
